West Boldon Lodge is a partnership between Groundwork South and North Tyneside and National Grid. We connect people with nature through play, education and conservation.
Our mission is to connect people with nature. We passionately believe that everyone should have the opportunity to experience the beauty of birdsong, the joy of spring flowers, the excitement of finding a millipede, and the release of strolling through a diverse woodland. We facilitate play, learning and conservation on a 13-hectare nature site.
West Boldon Lodge is a partnership between communities charity Groundwork South and North Tyneside, and landowners National Grid. Established in 1997, the centre has welcomed over 100,000 visitors to discover nature in the heart of South Tyneside.
National Grid sponsor Groundwork to manage the land around the West Boldon sub-station for the benefit of wildlife and people. Together, supported by 1000’s of volunteers, we’ve created a biodiverse site with mixed woodlands, ponds, meadows, coppice and marsh. We also have a volunteer-run allotment and establishing orchard.
Our dedicated team of experienced staff and volunteers deliver our mission. In the face of a climate and ecological crisis, our work is needed now more than ever. We love helping adults to improve their health through conservation work, toddlers to enjoy independent play at Forest Playschool, families to rediscover the magic of Christmas at Santa’s Winter Woodland and school children to learn about local wildlife on school trips.

Meet The Team
Groundwork South Tyneside and Newcastle (STAN) believe hands on, immersive educational experiences enable children to learn about, develop an interest in, and truly understand topics.
“Staff are absolutely fantastic, every event we’ve attended has felt super personal”. Our dedicated staff and volunteers are what make West Boldon Lodge so special and keep people coming back again and again. We couldn’t mention every one of our wonderful volunteers, but here’s the main team behind the activities you see at West Boldon Lodge.
Tom, Education Programme Lead
Tom is happiest in nature and loves getting others outdoors too. A committed climate activist, he came to West Boldon Lodge from an environmental background – originally volunteering with Groundwork in Leeds where he studied BSc Environmental Science. Tom is obsessed with his pet chickens and thinks an ideal weekend is spent camping in the woods and whittling spoons around a campfire with friends.
Leanne, Receptionist & Administrator
Leanne comes with a wealth of administration and business support experience and is keen to provide a warm welcome and exceptional customer experiences. She has worked in not for profits for many years and shares the Groundwork ethos of ensuring communities get the best out of their environments. A dedicated Mam she loves nothing more than spending time with her daughter or enjoying her other passion for music or being able to spend time with her friends.
Located by the A19, West Boldon Lodge is easily reached from across the North East. Car parking is limited, so we advise taking public transport if possible.
